What YouTube tags are, and where they went
Tags are keywords a creator adds to a video in YouTube Studio, under "Show more" in the video details. Viewers do not see them on the watch page, but YouTube’s public API returns them for every public video that has them. That is what this tool reads.
How much tags really help
Less than most tag tools suggest. YouTube’s own help page on tags says that the title, thumbnail and description are the more important pieces of information for discovery, because they are what viewers use to decide what to watch. Tags, it says, can be useful when your topic is commonly misspelled, and otherwise play a minimal role.
In practice: add a handful of accurate tags, include the common misspellings of your topic or brand name, and move on. The time is better spent on the two things viewers actually see before they click: the title and the thumbnail.
Good ways to use a tag extractor
Find the words your niche uses. Pull the tags from the top five videos on your topic and look for terms that repeat. They often reveal how people phrase a search, which is useful for your title and description, not only your tags.
Catch misspellings and alternate names. Big channels tag the spellings people actually type, like product names written three different ways. That is exactly the case where YouTube says tags help.
Audit your own uploads. Paste your own videos to check what tags you set years ago. Old tags that no longer describe the video are worth cleaning up.
Tag limits and format
YouTube Studio accepts up to 500 characters of tags per video. The commas between tags and the quotes around multi-word tags appear to count too, so the counter here includes them. The "Copy all tags" button gives you a comma-separated list you can paste straight into the Tags field, and the counter shows how much of the limit a list uses. Do not paste long tag lists into your description: YouTube treats that as spam under its policies.
